If ever there was a time to not want to be an internationally renowned actor then surely the first Sunday night of the year is it. Out they dutifully trotted, fresh from plates laden with Ozempic over the festive period, into the spotlight to gamely entertain us.
It was for the most part a stylish kick off to awards season. Leading the best dressed was The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri - who has become quite the fashion plate. She served up a deliciously simple but striking red Prada column dress with a tulle and satin train; bright tomato hues were a successful theme of the night. Florence Pugh chose a frothy red Valentino which she paired with a Teddy Boy quiff; Julianne Moore was elegant in scarlet strapless Bottega Veneta - hand nonchalantly posed in pockets, respect.

In naked dressing news, we are still here. Emma Stone leaned into the trend with floral embellished sheer and sparkly Louis Vuitton with delicate floral embellishment; Christina Ricci took a similar mood in spangly Fendi Haute Couture while Riley Keough fluttered in sheer white lace Chanel haute couture, and Emily Blunt in gold and white Alexander McQueen (notably Sarah Burton's final awards season look).

Special mention must of course go to the fashion daddies who were out in force. Timothée Chalamet was somewhat demure (for him) in black Celine; everyone’s favourite Barry (Keoghan) was jaunty in a fresh catwalk Damier-check look from Pharrell Williams’ first Louis Vuitton collection. Andrew Scott was angelic in a white Valentino suit (worn with a T-shirt, note), Pedro Pascal did a printed turtle neck Bottega Veneta (interesting) while for the purists, I give you Cillian Murphy in Saint Laurent (no tie). Calvin Klein's hot new signing Jeremy Allen White was covered up in yes, Calvin Klein - all black with a sexy sheer shirt. One assumes he had his white pants on underneath.

Getty ImagesMeanwhile Schiaparelli continues its ascent; Dua Lipa was fabulous in figure hugging black fishtail-hemmed number complete with gold embellishment applied in an almost skeletal skeletal-pattern; while Carey Mulligan was effortlessly cool in her own black fishtail gown with a slither of sparkle around the sweetheart neckline. Her Saltburn co-star Rosamund Pike was rather breathtaking in her New Look-ish Dior haute couture (an archive piece from 2019), complete with a chic black net Philip Treacy black fascinator worn to conceal scars on her face from a recent skiing accident. If anyone can turn a fall into fashion magic, it’s Pike.
