Dressing up with Tim Minchin

In 2005 I asked a make-up artist to make me look more rock and by the time I got to the Melbourne Comedy Festival in a long coat, I looked like Beethoven crossed with Robert Smith from The Cure.

I used to watch a lot of The Mighty Boosh back in Melbourne. Noel Fielding had a big influence on me by making it OK to create your own vibe and be camp. I’m camp and I’m happy to be camp.

Russell Brand already looked like me when I turned up on the comedy scene in 2006. So I thought, ‘f*** it’ and stole skinny jeans off him.

Chester Barrie is my go-to for tuxedos. I wore one for the Olivier Awards and then I wore it again to the Grammys. It comes out when I need to look sharp.

After Matilda the Musical I was given a beautiful set of red tails by the VIP ushers at the Cambridge Theatre. The occasion to wear long jackets doesn’t come often enough.

I get my hair straightened, which is quite a big thing. It’s naturally curly, so every six months I get it seen to.

I never wear shoes when I perform and usually have a big glass of red wine on stage. I like to pretend that I’m welcoming the audience into my lounge.

When I was younger I never had money to spend on clothes, so everything I wore came out of the grunge era. It wasn’t until things started going well and people started taking photos of me that it became too depressing and I had to make more of an effort.

I have a pair of silvery purple boots with four straps that I’m particularly proud of. They’re winkle-pickers with a Cuban heel and they’re hilarious.

My wife bought me a Doctor Who Tardis onesie and I wear it whenever it’s cold. It makes me so happy.
