Get ready to see a lot of ultraviolet next year.

Pantone has just selected it as its Colour of the Year for 2018.

Ultraviolet literally means 'beyond violet' - 'ultra' in Latin translates to 'beyond' - as violet is the colour with the highest frequencies of visible light. But we’re not talking about the spectrum of radiation here - we’re talking about a certain variation of purple.

Picked by Pantone because it wanted something bold and uplifting for the year ahead, Brian Woulfe, Founder and Managing Director of Designed by Woulfe, says “it works brilliantly in many different ways, for all different interior schemes”.

He advises the brave to go for block colours of the shade to give their space a feel of “punkish rebellion and regal opulence”.

For those who want to be on trend but not go OTT though, he promises ultraviolet goes well with softer tones such as greys and ochres.

Pantone has released its annual chosen colour since 2001, forecasting design trends from fashion to interiors.

Last year, it was frog green that won and before that Rose Quartz and Serenity which were ubiquitous in the design world thereafter.

But what do you think about ultraviolet? Will it take off? If Pantone’s track record is anything to go by, it’s looking likely.
