Stardom's clone daughters revealed

Normal mothers tend to fall into one of two camps: you're either a chocolate-finger mummy or a carrot-baton mummy. But Madonna, in her dotty Ab Fab sort of a way, is light years ahead. She's a purple-sprouting broccoli, constant-intellectual-stimulation mummy.

She is also rich enough not to have to rely on the television for its baby-sitting skills and not to have to hover by the kitchen table in a simmering rage while the kids chuck their lovingly prepared food on the floor. She makes the rules and other people enforce them. Consequently, she has put Lourdes, her fouryearold daughter with the £35,000 wardrobe, on a macrobiotic diet.

Heat magazine reports that the little girl has been banned from eating chips, macaroni, cheese and sweets; instead her menu includes brown rice, millet, untreated cabbage and dandelions.

Her diet is not all that marks out Lourdes as different from other girls her age. Madonna is perhaps the most glaring example of a star who seems intent on bringing up a Mini Me. Lourdes flies by private jet and has her own bodyguard. She is able to greet her mother in French, thanks to her private tutor, and receives regular Eve Lom facials, wears Miss Molly children's make-up and is a devotee of Bunny London dresses.

Madonna once said that she wanted Lola, as she calls her daughter, "to be the best-dressed girl in the world". "She's got a pretty sophisticated wardrobe for a four-year-old," says the singer. "She loves clothes, jewellery and dressing-up. She's the girliest girl I know - next to me." When Madonna goes to a fashion show, so does Lola. When Madonna went through an Indian phase, so did Lola. The little girl's latest craze is the rapper look: diamond bracelet, chunky earrings and a toe-ring.

Madonna's child has plenty of company in the celebrity Mini Me world.

Party organiser and PR Fran Cutler, business partner of Meg Mathews, says: "It's lovely to integrate your kids into your life as much as possible." Her child is unlikely to be able to melt into the background, having been named Mercy Magic. Aged four-and-a-half months, she is taken "everywhere" by her mother "as long as there's no smoking".

On a recent trip to Paris, Fran took Mercy to see her godfather, the British couturier John Galliano, now head designer at Dior. "She came away swathed in Baby Dior and looks really cool," says the proud mother. "I mean, I have a few pieces but she's much better dressed than me." Cutler adds: "It's a Sixties thing. My mother took us to Biba when we were little and we all bought versions of the same clothes."

Another Mini Me Mum is Melanie Blatt. Her daughter, too, carries around a showbusiness name - Lilyella - in honour of the former All Saint's favourite flower and jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. For Blatt, her Mini Me needs not only to dress like mum, she needs to be seen in all the right places. When she was just a few months old, Lilyella was being taken in and out of Covent Garden's smartest shops; and just a few days ago, the two-year-old attended London Fashion Week with her mum.

Former TV presenter Emma Forbes knew from the start that her daughter was going to have to be a smart young thing. When she fell pregnant with Lily, Forbes said she aimed to be "a funky, happening mother". Six years on, she owns Semmalina, a shop in Ebury Street which sells children's clothes and furniture, and reflects her daughter's sartorial preferences. Nor has Lily been able to escape the limelight so beloved by her mother: she has already appeared in a Country Life fashion shoot and advertised Tropicana orange juice.

Forbes says she opened Semmalina to "bring back the magic" into childhood, and for this reason she stocks nothing high-tech. Instead, she sells bespoke nursery furniture and one-off dresses made of rare vintage materials.

For the Mini Me mother, nothing but the best will do.
