Levi Roots launches Brixton lunch initiative

Dragon’s Den star, Levi Roots has helped launch a new lunch initiative to feed schoolchildren who can’t afford lunches during the holidays.

The pilot scheme was launched in Brixton through the St Matthew’s Project and is due to be rolled out in the summer by charity StreetGames.

Levi met some of the young people and project leaders who run the sessions at Brockwell Park, Brixton, and shared his own experiences as a youngster in the area. The 60 young people who attended got the chance to play football, as well as getting lunch, provided by EAT and FareShare, as part of the programme.

The national initiative, called Fit and Fed, will impact 7,500 young people across the country.

The project will also tackle inactivity and isolation amongst schoolchildren.

The St Matthew’s Project uses football to provide a safe and encouraging environment where young people can come together and enjoy structured sports and learning opportunities.

The Project now regularly engages with over 160 young people every week from across the Tulse Hill and Brixton area and provides free, fun football activities to young people living within one of the most deprived areas of the country.
