The Daily Telegraph is to remove motion and heat sensors after staff reacted angrily to being tracked by bosses.
The devices were installed under desks at the newspaper’s offices in Victoria over the weekend in an apparent attempt to monitor energy uses.
The journalists were baffled by the unannounced appearance of the black boxes and resorted to Googling the brand name only to discover they were wireless motion detectors produced by a company called OccupEye.
One unnamed Daily Telegraph employee called the four-week trial “ridiculous” and “embarrassing.”
The paper said the devices were installed as an environmental measure to make the floors in the building as energy-efficient as possible.

OccupEye's website emphasises the importance of the devices to "absorb the cost and scale of nationwide workplace inefficiency."
The motion sensor installed tracks the body heat of workers to find out if they are sitting at their desks.
The Telegraph said the sensors would be removed immediately following objections from some of its 1,100 staff.
