5 stops on the Sloane trail

If you want to find out more about the legacy of Sir Hans Sloane, here are five places to visit.

SLOANE SQUARE Sir Hans Sloane owned the Chelsea Manor Estate and this SW3 square was built in 1771. Visit on the afternoon of Sat 13 Sep and you may bump into the great man himself (or an actor looking very similar to him).

CHELSEA PHYSIC GARDEN Sloane leased four acres to the Society Of Apothecaries for £5 a year soon after he bought Chelsea Manor. The garden has the earliest rockery and a stunning collection of plants. Swan Walk, SW3. Sun 2pm-6pm, Wed noon-5pm. £5.

CHEYNE WALK No 18 was once Don Saltero's - a coffee house opened by Sloane's former servant and barber James Salter. Coffee drinkers could have their teeth pulled, too. Nos 19-26 Cheyne Walk are believed to be the site of Sloane's manor house, where Anne Of Cleves, Catherine Parr and Elizabeth I were past residents.

CHELSEA OLD CHURCH Sloane was a regular at services and was buried here in 1753. There's a Portland stone monument just inside the garden. The church, in Cheyne Walk, is also where Henry VIII married Jane Seymour.

DOVEHOUSE GREEN On Dovehouse Street, this green space was donated by Sloane as a burial ground. At the back of the garden are family crests of everyone who owned the land.
