Cloud House wins planning approval: eco-friendly millennial pink Disney-style home in Camden will be built
Architect Peter Morris has planning permission from Camden council to rebuild his Victorian house, which he describes as “environmentally terrible, leaking heat”.
He’s using insulated concrete blocks made off-site that slot together quickly and will shave four months off building time, saving on construction energy.
“We should always be building better,” he says. Nicknamed the Cloud House, it will have cloud-like windows and a green roof.
The millennial pink building will be a pair of houses, one for Morris to live in with his wife and daughter and the other to sell.
The Disney castle-style design was inspired by the tall, thin arches of the Grade I-listed church nearby, described by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-83) as “the craziest of London's Victorian churches".
"A lot of people say the design is quite Art Deco-style, others have said it looks like a mosque. I wasn’t directly influenced by either of those things but I can see what they mean,” said Morris.
The choice of buff pink walls with teal window frames and metalwork was inspired by the famous Art Deco architecture of Miami, where Mr Morris and his wife spent their honeymoon.
The family plan to make the interiors even bolder, with contrasting colours and patterns and polka-dot tiles followed through from the roof.
