Should men be allowed to cling to antiquated rituals that exclude women? Gentlemen's clubs, Masonic lodges, lads' nights and stag nights are one thing, but asking women to discreetly withdraw at the end of dinner to let men pass a port decanter clockwise, smoke cigars and tell bawdy tales is bizarre. Perhaps men see the event as a sanctuary - a haven? Port, after all, gets its name from Oporto in Portugal which, in turn, comes from the Latin word 'portus', meaning a haven. Most women I know enjoy a glass of good port every bit as much as men, so why should they be excluded? So, I arranged a port tasting inviting four men and four women. All the women politely declined; all the men accepted. With dogged masculinity, we went ahead anyway, tasting more than two dozen affordable ports. These were the ones we liked most.
