London swept the boards at last night’s National Restaurant Awards by claiming more than half of the top 100, but was denied the top spot by a Kentish gastropub.

The Sportsman in Seasalter, which has held a Michelin star for eight years, was named the nation’s best, leading a top 10 comprised of seven restaurants from the capital.

Tapas restaurant Barrafina’s Adelaide Street branch took the second spot, Notting Hill’s The Ledbury came in at three and Hedone in Chiswick placed fourth.

Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac rounded off the top five while Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cumbia reached number eight, interrupting London’s run that saw The Clove Club at six, Alan Pickett’s new Fitzrovia restaurant Piquet at seven, James Lowe’s Lyle’s at nine and west London institution The River Café at ten.

The top 20 also featured The Dairy, Le Gavroche and A Wong along with newcomers Hoppers and Frenchie.

In total London restaurants occupied 53 of the top 100 list, on top of which Thai restaurant Som Saa was named one to watch, Jason Atherton’s Social Eating House was declared cocktail list of the year, and Noble Rot won the award for the best wine list. Piquet was this year’s highest new entry.

The list is compiled using votes from 150 industry experts, including chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and critics.
