What's on the menu? The menu is the kind of brief you’re grateful for on a hangover: no oddities to deal with, just all the brunch staples present and correct. There’s both a Full English (points for black pudding and a popular HP gravy) and a vegetarian equivalent, worth it for the sweet potato hashbrowns.
The choice of Belgium or American waffles is a deliciously tough one – though more about the toppings than the waffle, in honesty. It's hard to resist the candied bacon, but the fresh fruit and crème fraîche meant the European offering won on our visit. For drinks, the Nimbu Pani (a lightly salted lemon and lime concoction) is a refreshing must, especially at at just £1.50, while the Bloody Brute (chipotle infused bourbon, tomato, smoked paprika and red wine) lives up to its name: Mary wouldn’t stand a chance in a bar fight. Try the Mezcal twist too. Coffee is excellent, and comes from local Hackney blenders Dark Arts Coffee.
Where is it? Wander along Homerton high street and on the unassuming corner of Ponsford Street and Furrow Lane sits the Plough. It’s easy to miss: an old, weather-beaten neighbourhood boozer. Venture in for a stripped-down, modern room kept bright by its big windows. It’s simple, but punctuated with fun details: the original bar is kept, at the tables sit old school chairs and the lights hang bare. It’s hipster-chic, but without being irritating about it.
