Traditional Philippine breakfast: tapsilog from Lola Sisay1. On Wednesday, Vietnamese chicken rice noodle salad from Leon for lunch — a tasty take on the Mare Street classic, if slightly heavy on the fish sauce.
2. On Thursday a traditional Philippine breakfast of tapsilog — rice, fried eggs, thinly sliced beef and pickled papaya — from Lola Sisay, Upton Park’s new “pan-Asian” café.
3. On Saturday at a housewarming barbecue we were treated to a Swedish smorgasbord from the hostess, including home-made inlagd gurka (pickled cucumber), knäckebröd (crispbread) and — my favourite — skagenröra seafood salad.
4. Later, at the same barbecue, the Turkish sausage fared impressively well on the open flame.
5. On Monday afternoon a Colombian coffee ice lolly from M&S’s Spirit of Summer range. It’s early in the week but this suitably caffeinated, 66-calorie refreshment is an allowable treat.
