Choice is king at The Hyde Bar in Paddington

London has gained a new hotel bar in Paddington, but you wouldn’t know it.

That’s partly because The Hyde is rather well, erm, hidden. But also because, with grand oil paintings, a roaring fire and cosy corner couches it feels like it has been there for decades.

Along with a menu of small plates it prides itself on lists of wine, whisky, gin and cocktails — and rather impressively manages to do all of them pretty well.

A strong cocktail list starts from £14, with creative originals such as the El Rey made with El Dorado rum, yellow chartreuse, saffron and orange sitting alongside the classics. You’re in especially safe hands with the latter — the team have both skills and the superb ingredients in abundance.

To get a sense of the selection of spirits available, note there are 21 gins, 17 rums and more than 70 whiskies. These start at £9 and rise to over £1000.

To offer some sustenance while you explore all these, small plates span yellowfin tuna, some excellent triple-cooked goose fat chips, and the highlight: croqueta-like deep-fried beef and horseradish ‘truffles’.

Visitors staying at the hotel are lucky to have such a relaxed but luxury offering on site, but The Hyde will hope to be more than that. Indeed, it has enough class to become a local favourite.
