Accordingly, across the country, women’s rugby is blossoming as more players take up the game. It’s not just growth, it’s a sporting revolution. Here are three of the best clubs in London for those keen to try it themselves.

Barnes RFC

Queen Elizabeth Walk, SW13, barnesrfc.org

Women’s rugby is booming thanks to the Red Roses’ stunning triumph in last weekend’s World Cup final. Today, there are clubs all over London, including Barnes, which founded its female section in 2004. The club is looking for new players, both to play and to socialise with a glass or two.

Blackheath Rugby

Kidbrook Lane, SE9, blackheathrugby.co.uk

Blackheath is the oldest surviving open rugby club in the world, founded in 185. The women’s team won the south east division championship twice in recent years. Blackheath is always looking for new players, whether skilled or novice, and is a particularly social club, with regular meet-ups. It also happens to be in one of the most picturesque parts of London, surrounded by excellent pubs.

Ironsides

Burntwood Lane, SW17, ironsidesrugby.com

Ironsides Women play in Battersea, with two teams offering structured training in a “supportive environment”. The club is especially inclusive and is committed to developing the women’s game and recruiting new players. The first team plays in the Championship South East 2 League, but there’s a casual section too for beginners. There are regular socials as well and even an annual overseas tour.
