It was another great year for London theatre at the Tony Awards, with The Ferryman picking up Best Play.
Jez Butterworth can now add the Broadway accolade to his trophy cabinet, after also winning the Evening Standard Theatre Award and Olivier Award for his drama set in 1980s Northern Ireland. The production picked up four awards in total, including best director for Sam Mendes.
It transferred to Broadway last year after hit runs at the Royal Court Theatre and West End’s Gielgud Theatre.
Other notable winners were Bertie Carvel and Bryan Cranston, who both picked up acting gongs for performances they originated in London (Rupert Murdoch in Ink and Howard Beale in Network, respectively).
James Graham's Ink, which transferred to the West End from the Almeida before its Broadway run, also saw Neil Austin win the award for Best Lighting Design in a Play.

The night’s biggest winner was musical Hadestown, which scooped eight awards. The folk musical based on Greek mythology, written by Anais Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin, first opened at the National Theatre last year before moving to Broadway.
It was the second year in a row that London productions made a major impact on the Tonys; in 2018, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the National Theatre revival of Angels in America led the way.
The Tonys, now in their 73rd year, were presented by James Corden. He opened the show with a musical tribute to live entertainment.
