This little piggy… British Cured Meat Festival comes to Borough MarketBest of British: Cannon and Cannon cured meat

Forget Italian prosciutto, Spanish Iberico and French saucisson. A food festival coming to Borough Market this spring is set to show that British cured meat can outshine anything made on the Continent.

The one-day event on Sunday 27th May will feature an artisan meat market, live bands, cookery demos and a wine and charcuterie pairing, alongside the inaugural British Cured Meat Awards.

The live competition will be hosted by Sunday Brunch presenter and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Simon Rimmer, with a line-up of judges that includes Spanish chef Jose Pizarro, Hawksmoor’s Richard Turner, and Duck & Waffle’s Dan Doherty.

The event will also feature craft beer and wine stalls, a cheese tasting, a pie-making masterclass from Holborn Dining Room chef Calum Franklin, and street food from Hawksmoor and Pizza Pilgrims.

Organiser Sean Cannon, who also runs British cured meat distributor Cannon & Cannon, said: “The British cured meat scene has been developing for some time now and is up there with the most exciting food movements anywhere in the world.”

He added: “I genuinely believe that British products can now stand up to any charcuterie from Italy, Spain or anywhere around the world.”

All 200 UK-based cured meat companies have been invited to enter the awards, with entries open from 3rd February. Tickets to the event go on sale on 13th February and start at £7.50 including a free beer.
