One of Britain’s youngest and fastest rising culinary stars has won his first central London head chef role at Princess Diana’s favourite restaurant.

Ben Murphy, 26, has taken over the kitchen at Launceston Place in Kensington, charged with winning back the Michelin star it lost last year.

He was previously head chef at The Woodford in east London, winning a series of accolades including Evening Standard Restaurant of the Year and a rare five-star rating from AA Gill.

Murphy said his food would be simply cooked but strong on flavours and presentation. “We’re not going to be doing lots of sous vide and water bathing — it’ll be pieces of meat and fish cooked really well with maximum flavour and looking very pretty on the plate,” he added.

Mains on the £55 three-course à la carte dinner menu include cod with ink, Jerusalem artichoke and lemon. There is also a seven-course tasting menu at £70 and a £30 three-course set lunch menu. The restaurant opened in 1986 and was a frequent destination for Diana, who had a cheese soufflé named in her honour.
