The debut of Marc Jacobs' grunge collection in 1992 was a divisive moment in fashion history.
The looks, all flannel shirts, printed granny dresses, Dr. Martens and knitted skullcaps, was one that got Marc Jacobs fired from Perry Ellis, the clothing brand he was working for at the time. It was however also arguably the show that made his career.
Now, 25 years later, the designer has brought back 26 now iconic looks from the show as part of his “Redux Grunge” capsule which celebrates the cultural significance of the collection that went on to become a badge of cool in a cultural era presided over by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
And as part of the release, Jacobs has teamed up with every grunge lover’s favourite bootmaker, Dr. Martens, for a set of limited-edition boots.
Taking its cues from the 1993 show in which every model stomped the runway in a pair of DMs, the collection reimagines the 1490 boot in four '90s colours: patent vanilla, patent lilac, black and shiny patent black.
The boots cost £190 and feature all the core Docs DNA: sturdy leather uppers, logo’ed heel loop and yellow welt stitching, plus a dual-branded “Redux Grunge” tongue label and lining and optional Marc Jacobs-branded laces.
The Dr Martens x Redux Grunge Collection boots launch online and in store on December 8.
