The channel has acquired the 10-part series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name

Critically-acclaimed US series The Handmaid’s Tale will air on Channel 4 later this month after the broadcaster acquired the rights from MGM.

It’s good news for UK fans of Margaret Atwood’s novel as before now it was unclear as to whether or not the US adaptation would be shown on this side of the pond.

Starring Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss, the show is set in the fictional Gilead, a near-future totalitarian society under threat from environmental disaster and a plummeting birth rate.

Moss stars as a Handmaid – a concubine forced to procreate as part of an effort to repopulate the society. The show depicts Moss’ character and other Handmaids’ battle for freedom from their oppression and enslavement.

Samira Wiley (Orange is the New Black), Joseph Fiennes (American Horror Story) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) co-star.

Jay Hunt, Channel 4’s chief creative officer said he was “delighted” to be bringing the adaptation to British screens:

The Handmaid’s Tale will air later this month, an exact broadcast date has yet to be confirmed.
