Canadian and U.S. viewers may find relevance in Hannah Khalique‑Brown's cyber‑threat drama on The Undeclared War

Channel 4’s second series of The Undeclared War is now broadcasting, and it could not be more timely. The plot follows a Russian cyber‑attack that threatens the United Kingdom, a scenario that mirrors recent reports of heightened Russian cyber activity in both Canada and the United States.

Inside the show

Hannah Khalique‑Brown returns opposite Simon Pegg, portraying Saara Parvin – a brilliant student on placement at GCHQ when the attack unfolds. The narrative picks up immediately after the first series, with Russian aircraft appearing to head for the UK and the discovery of a mole within the operation. An opening ten‑minute one‑shot sequence left Khalique‑Brown’s heart racing, and she and Pegg described their on‑set chemistry as “like kids in assembly trying not to laugh”.

“Before the first season I learned to programme languages,” Khalique‑Brown explained, noting that she took up coding to ensure she could convincingly play a prodigy. She added that the series serves as “a warning about the hidden hands controlling our democracy. It's a cautionary tale and I hope people pay attention.”

Career trajectory

Born in Birmingham to an NHS surgeon father and a barrister mother, Khalique‑Brown earned first‑class honours in English Literature at King’s College before turning to acting. Determined to break into the industry, she wrote hundreds of letters to agents and casting directors, eventually securing a showcase slot at DABBS Generals Day for non‑white actors. The exposure led to an agent and her first major role as Saara Parvin.

Since then, her résumé includes appearances in Black Doves, Dune: Prophecy and Barbie. She also performs as a singer in the band Big Sky Orchestra with her husband, Benedict Mann. Their single “Endless Light” is currently available.

Beyond acting

Khalique‑Brown is expanding her skill set, studying new languages and training in sumo wrestling. She describes her career as an obsessive pursuit, likening it to a need for oxygen that drives her to connect with audiences and create collectively.

The second season of The Undeclared War is now on Channel 4, offering a dramatised glimpse into the cyber‑security challenges that are increasingly front‑page news across the Atlantic.
