Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent is set to join the cast of Game of Thrones.

The actor has been cast in the hotly-anticipated Season 7 of HBO’s critically acclaimed drama.

While HBO are typically tight-lipped about the fantasy series, a spokesperson told Entertainment Weekly that Broadbent’s role will be “significant.”

Broadbent is no stranger to fantasy, having played bumbling potions professor Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter films.

Alongside winning an Academy Award for his supporting role in Iris, Broadbent has cropped up in a slew of films including recent cult favourites Hot Fuzz and Cloud Atlas.

Thrones Fans have been quick to guess how he will slot into the series.

Some are suggesting that we may see him interact with fan-favourite Sam Tarly as a Maester in the impressive Citadel, which Sam finally journeyed to in last season’s finale.

However, others feel that Broadbent isn't an obvious fit for Maester Marwyn, the bold and forward-thinking Archmaester introduced in George RR Martin's book A Dance with Dragons.
