The first Doctor Who trailer for series 11 is set to launch during the World Cup final.

The BBC has confirmed that the teaser for the latest instalment of the hit sci-fi show will air this weekend.

The sneak-peek comes ahead of the shows full return in September when Jodie Whittaker will take the reigns as the first female Doctor.

The BBC confirmed the news in a tweet posting: “The #WorldCup may not be coming home but the TARDIS is on its way.

“Tune into the World Cup Final this Sunday or come back here for the exclusive first look of new #DoctorWho and friends.”

Whittaker’s role as lead on the show was announced in July last year.

Earlier this month the BBC revealed it is taking legal action over leaked Doctor Who footage that appeared online last week.

A 53-second clip showing Whittaker in the famous role alongside two still images of the show’s first female doctor was shared on a mobile-based forum.

The leaked footage was then shared around social media before being swiftly deleted, while fans raged at the idea of somebody leaking anything from the upcoming series.

In a statement, BBC Studios said that it “will strive to protect our programme-makers, audiences and licence fee payers from any breaches of security - ensuring Doctor Who fans enjoy the final and fully completed version of the episode when it premieres”.
