Coronation Street bosses have issued an apology after viewers complained over a ‘racist’ joke in a recent episode.
An instalment aired on Bank Holiday Monday saw Catherine Tyldesley’s character Eva Price enter Audrey’s salon and say: “I have more roots than Kunta Kinte.
“No idea who that is, by the way, just something my mum used to say.”
Kunta Kinte was a character in the novel and TV series Roots: The Saga of an American Family, which offered an uncompromising look at slavery.
The episode sparked over 270 Ofcom complaints from viewers.
“Ofcom has received 278 complaints about Coronation Street, which aired on Monday,” on Ofcom spokesperson said.
“We will assess these complaints before we decide whether to investigate or not.”
Viewers were also quick to pick up on the remark on Twitter.
