The Far Side Of The Moon

For me Robert Lepage is someone who makes theatre for people who don't like theatre. By that I mean the visual content is as important as the text. Plus, he has a broad field of reference - from film, art and science. For example, his one-man show Needles And Opium was a fantastic mix of Jean Cocteau, Miles Davis and his own persona. It had visual images - such as the metallic elements silhouetted to form a trumpet - which will stay with me for life.

His new show, The Far Side Of The Moon, is about two brothers and their relationship with their mum. One of the brothers is a down-to-earth weatherman and the other is a head-in-the-sky academic. Laurie Anderson's music in this creates moods that seem empty and pregnant at the same time. Robert has assembled her music like a DJ and it's set in a Laundromat where his use of washing machines hangs with me like the trumpet in Needles And Opium.

I spent some weeks working with Robert in Quebec on a show to do with the aviation alphabet called Zulu Time - it's coming to the Roundhouse next year. Watching him work with his team was impressive because he's firm but open. He has what I call a high moisture content - unlike people who have a sort of dryness. I associate moisture with fertility, aliveness, ritual and mystery.

Sometimes Robert's work can seem rarified, but the best are his one-man shows. They send the imagination spinning and touch you deeply. I know his sister thinks this is by far the most revealing as to who he is. He's one of the most exciting people I've worked with. He can lead you down a path which feels both strange and familiar and you don't know where you're being taken.
