Sandman brings us epic dreams

To say that Steve Tiplady has been gathering dust for years is not an impertinent allegation that he has been idle. Far from it - this curious artist has ventured into the tenebrous world of the ancient classics, and with only three overhead projectors, and some buckets of sand, has conjured up Homer's Odyssey.

Just in case this makes it sound as if Tiplady has a nasty case of the Blue Peters, imagine, for a moment, his shadowy figure representing Odysseus on stage. Suddenly a snake of white light coils itself around his body, bringing an other-worldly magic to his description of being captured by the seductive nymph Calypso.

Tiplady's style oscillates between low rent and high epic, as if trying to prove there is only a two-letter difference between nerd and hero. He welcomes the audience with a brief technical description of his overhead projector - before explaining that missing his family during a trip to a puppet festival in Belgium put him in mind of Odysseus's trials getting home to Penelope and Telemachus.

Heaps of sand on the overhead projectors are manipulated by Tiplady, Sally Brown and Zannie Fraser, so that as fingers trace patterns in the sand, those patterns are recreated in light around the darkened stage. This charming and occasionally ingenious way of evoking a mythic fantasy ultimately shows there's no place like Homer.
