Review at a glance

In Thomas Eccleshare’s Heather (directed by Valentina Ceschi, and at Bush Theatre in October) we see the developing relationship between reclusive children’s author Heather and her ambitious publisher, Harry.

Initially, motherhood and then Heather’s illness prevent them meeting, but as her books start to fly off the shelves and a film deal is in the offing a troubling narrative starts to unfold.

Is Heather all she seems?

Ashley Gerlach and Charlotte Melia bring warmth and conviction to their characters and Eccleshare has been bold in his storytelling.

He raises some interesting questions about the power of language, whether it’s to inform, entertain or deceive.
