Mr Jukes is a new name but not a new face.
With a number one album, a Mercury nomination and a sellout Earls Court show behind him, Jack Steadman could have gone solo under his real name, though as the frontman of one of the more anonymous indie rock success stories of recent years – Bombay Bicycle Club – even that may not have offered much brand recognition.
In any case, his new alias suits a mixed up jukebox sound that couldn’t have less to do with his fairly meek past work.
It’s built on dusty samples, all chunky hip hop beats and horn blasts, with guest vocals from powerful soul singers such as Charles Bradley, Lianne La Havas and Donny Hathaway’s daughter Lalah.
File next to The Avalanches or your old school rap collection, well away from the indie discs.
Steadman has good stories about conceiving the music on long journeys, such as on the Trans-Siberian Express and a US cargo ship.
The first Mr Jukes album, God First, is out next month around the same time as a London show, and offers a globetrotting, genre-hopping sound that deserves to win him a whole new fanbase.
