Virtually famous: Kacy Hill

Clearly the best way to get a demo tape into Kanye West’s hands is to train as a professional dancer and gain employment five yards behind him.

Kacy Hill was a backing dancer on West’s Yeezus tour and acquitted herself well enough to land a record deal with his GOOD Music label.

The redhead doesn’t have much hip hop to her sound. Her recently unveiled single, Lion, is produced by Madonna/Pet Shop Boys man Stuart Price and is an unhurried, powerful electronic anthem complete with spooky, digitally altered backing vocals.

An earlier single, Foreign Fields, brushes up against James Blake’s piano-led future soul, while her soft voice takes her closer to Dido territory on the more conventional Arm’s Length. Lately she’s been supporting Jack Garratt on tour and next she’ll be modelling for Calvin Klein’s autumn campaign along with Frank Ocean and Kate Moss.

It’s more good company for a singer whose march towards centre stage seems assured.
