Virtually famous: Declan McKenna

In a week when we’ve been nagging young people to get off Snapchat for five minutes and register to cast their views on Brexit, the rise of Hertfordshire’s Declan McKenna is proof that many aren’t as feckless as they look.

Still just 17, before he finished his GCSEs last summer he won Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent Competition. eHeHe has used that platform to release singles about FIFA corruption (Brazil), transgender teenagers (Paracetamol) and religion as justification for sinful deeds (Bethlehem, whose video appeared online this week).

Like Ed Sheeran breaking through with his song The A Team, about a crack-addicted prostitute, McKenna delivers thoughtful, serious lyrics within strong melodies and choruses that stick.

There’s something of Jamie T’s sound in his casual singing style. He doesn’t take the obvious routes either – Paracetamol is sung from the perspective, not of an outraged teen, but of an authority figure who doesn’t understand LGBT issues.

He has explained the song carefully in a national newspaper blog, and sounds like he has his head screwed on very tightly. If only he were old enough to vote.
