“MY WOMAN,” Florence Welch tweeted earlier this month, bracketing the words with purple love hearts and accompanying them with a photograph of Angel Olsen’s new album spinning on her record player.
The Missouri singer-songwriter’s third long player, which is called My Woman, was released in September and was already being heaped with praise before this heavyweight endorsement.
Having started out as a singer for indie-folk figurehead Will Oldham, then making lo-fi, gothic guitar rock in her solo material, this release seems like she’s upped her game ready for a breakthrough.
However, the superficial changes – she puts shiny synthesizers on her new song Intern, and rollerskates in a sparkly wig in the video for Shut Up Kiss Me – don’t take away from the fact that she’s still trading in intense, emotional rock music. “I dare you to understand what makes me a woman,” she sings on Woman, over seven minutes of slow-burning power.
People want to find out in increasing numbers – there’s a big Camden gig this week and she’s just announced a third London appearance for next year. She could be your woman too.
