Former prime minister Justin Trudeau, aged 54, was absent from Canada’s opening World Cup match in Toronto on Sunday, opting instead to attend a performance by his girlfriend, pop star Katy Perry, at the United States opening ceremony in Los Angeles.
Trudeau explained the decision on X, writing: “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I'm rooting for to take the Cup.” The post was accompanied by a Canadian‑flag emoji and attracted criticism for missing his country’s first game in the tournament, which is being co‑hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The 2026 World Cup marks the first occasion since 2007 that Canada has hosted matches, and the Los Angeles ceremony was the first World Cup opening event held in the United States since 1994. Perry performed her song “Wonder” ahead of the United States’ group‑stage match against Paraguay.
On the same day, Canada staged its own opening ceremony in Toronto, featuring performances by Michael Bublé and Alanis Morissette, underscoring the shared hosting responsibilities of the neighbouring nations.
Trudeau and Perry were first rumoured to be dating in July 2025 and confirmed their relationship in December of the same year. The former prime minister had been married to broadcaster Sophie Grégoire Trudeau for 18 years before their split was announced in 2023; the couple have three children.
He concluded a nine‑year tenure as Canada’s prime minister after announcing his resignation as Liberal Party leader in January 2025.
