Five songs to hear this week (April 8-14)

Parquet Courts are the finest new additions to the long line of New York punk bands, back with a new album, Human Performance, out today. Their unusually high budget video for the lead song, Berlin Got Blurry, is on YouTube.

Mayer Hawthorne’s high voice and cosmic soul has won the approval of Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Pharrell. His new album, Man About Town, including the smooth single Love Like That, is out today.

As MK, Detroit producer MK had some hits in the Nineties. Now he’s back with an old school piano house tune featuring The Voice contestant turned clubland vocalist Becky Hill. Piece of Me is on sale and on YouTube now.

Minor Victories is a supergroup far from the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young model. It’s a low key indie affair including Rachel Goswell from Slowdive, Editors’ Justin Lockey and Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite, and sounding very lovely on Folk Arp, the first song from an album due in June.

Ben Watt released his first solo album in 1983, got distracted by his duo Everything But the Girl and has only gone back to his singer-songwriter roots lately. His current band, including Suede’s Bernard Butler, sounds confident on a new album out today, Fever Dream, and the single Gradually.
