Five songs to hear this week (March 17-23)

Between them, Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson have now put 10 different singles into the UK top 10, so it stands to reason that their new collaboration should be the only thing that can put a dent in Ed Sheeran at the moment. Symphony arrives on all streaming services today.

Former Independent journalist Joseph Charlton’s band Our Mother are back with a new single, Heaven, and a gig at Bethnal Green’s Pickle Factory at the end of this month. It’s a tense, clanking electronic composition, packed with synthesized horns, which is on Soundcloud now.

Given the dusty country sounds on offer on her new album, Golden Eagle, it’s surprising to learn that Holly Macve is from Yorkshire and only visited America for the first time last year. The album’s an old-time charmer, particularly Heartbreak Blues, which has a video on YouTube now.

Newbury singer-songwriter Frances went quiet after losing out to Jack Garratt for the Brits Critics’ Choice award in early 2016, but she’s finally here with a debut album. Things I’ve Never Said is out today, and the lively new single, No Matter, suggests there’s more to her than her early billing as the female Sam Smith.

Acclaimed Texas indie band Spoon release their ninth album, Hot Thoughts, today. A surreal video for the funky single, Can I Sit Next to You, preceded it on YouTube.
