Lucy Raven is fascinated with the processes behind film production.
In RP31, she takes 31 test patterns and calibration charts used by projectionists to ensure correct framing and focus and makes of them a kaleidoscopic abstract film animation.
At first it’s chaos; almost too much to bear. But slowly, it becomes mesmerising, even meditative: as your brain adjusts, it seems to slow time down.
Curtains is a similarly transformative neuro-optical experience. We don 3D glasses and watch as the red and blue elements of 3D images slowly come together.
It feels like a fight between your brain and your eyes, which reaches an epiphany as the two images finally meet, and an unexpectedly tumultuous experience as they separate again.
Raven exposes film’s nuts and bolts, but imbues them with new magic.
