Culture | FilmThis week's new DVD releases (Aug 1-7)Reviews of the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases, plus box sets and movie downloadsColour and action: Rio 2Steve Morrissey1 August 2014Starred Up (Fox, cert 18, DVD/Blu-ray/digital)Jack O’Connell gives a star-is-born turn as the young lag toughing his way to the top, in a British prison drama with attack, grit and a surprise in the showers. The Double(StudioCanal, cert 15, DVD/Blu-ray/digital)Richard Ayoade’s Submarine follow-up turns Dostoevsky’s story about a man (Jesse Eisenberg) haunted by his own double into an impressive Gilliamesque nightmare. Black Narcissus (Network, cert PG, Blu-ray)Nuns are driven to lustful frenzy in the Himalayas in the must-own 1947 classic from Powell and Pressburger, surely one of the most beautifully shot films ever. Half of a Yellow Sun(Soda, cert 15, DVD/Blu-ray)Gone with the Wind, Nigerian style, with Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor as lovers thrown hither and yon by the Biafran war. Excellent ingredients, so-so results. Labor Day (Paramount, cert 12, DVD/Blu-ray/digital)A single mum is re-introduced to intimacy by escaped lag Josh Brolin in Kate Winslet’s latest attempt to exhume Joan Crawford. Achingly romantic, totally bonkers. Pioneer (Arrow, cert 15, DVD/Blu-ray)This Norwegian thriller about the race to extract oil from Norway’s sea bed boasts American star Wes Bentley (barely in it) and feels like a TV series squeezed till it yelps. Rio 2(Fox, cert U, DVD/Blu-ray/digital)Like Rio 1, a kaleidoscope of colour and action, full of ADHD sidekick animals, everything focused on blue macaws Blu and Jewel, so dull you want to shoot them. Box SetsClint Eastwood: The Blu-ray Collection(Universal, cert 18, Blu-ray)This box of all Eastwood’s eight Universal films – including High Plains Drifter and The Eiger Sanction – is a good one, if a bit steeply priced at 40-odd quid. CSI Miami: The Complete Collection(E One, cert 15, DVD)This first CSI spin-off ran for ten years and gave Channel 5 a ratings boost. All 282 episodes are here. David Caruso: prepare to put on/take off those sunglasses. Z-Cars Collection 2(Acorn, cert PG, DVD)The 1962-1978 cop series with the whistle-along theme tune had become a forerunner of The Bill by the time these 1972 episodes aired – amiable, well played soap.Read MoreRob Reiner had greatest ever run of movies, Richard Osman says as director found deadAlan Partridge star Steve Coogan says Reform UK is ‘anti-human rights’Four Lions star says he was asked about terrorism by airport securitySponsoredThe best destinations and activities to book this winter Latest film reviews 1/99 MORE ABOUTActors And ActressesDVDsFilm Directors
