Imagine an episode of Malcolm in the Middle directed by wacky auteur Wes Anderson, and you’ll know pretty much what to expect from Jordan Vogt-Roberts’s rites-of-passage debut. Three teenage boys, led by the (apparently regular) Joe (Nick Robinson), set up home in a deep, dark, Ohian forest. Without telling their parents. Joe’s widower dad, Frank, is not best pleased and, because he’s played by Nick Offerman, who resembles a blighted Kelsey Grammer, this is funny. Crisp visuals and a kooky performance from scrunch-faced, American-Colombian urchin Moises Arias provide the other jewels in the crown.
