In Intolerable Cruelty, Clooney is called upon to fall over and beg, tear up prenuptial agreements, sulk, and back-seat drive like a lunatic. This sacrificing of dignity by a prince among men makes him, in WH Auden's phrase, silly like us, and Clooney is the prince de nos jours - although this is as much by default as anything else (Cusack is too light, Crowe's too cross, Carey's too scary, Affleck's too asinine, Depp's too much his own man, Damon ... hmmm).
