Romantic comedy without the jokes

Billed as "a romantic comedy without the sugar", this is also a romantic comedy without the romance and, come to that, the comedy, unless you are turned on by a lot of high-decibel screeching, such as only Americans are capable of, and vulgar skits in the Farrelly brothers tradition.

Cameron Diaz (she of There's Something About Mary) submits to further ritual humiliation as one of three goodtime girls whose nocturnal habits make Bridget Jones look like Jane Eyre. Then she falls for a small-town estate agent who advertises his services on bus-stop seats with the slogan "Everything I touch turns to sold".

Thomas Jane, who plays him, is good-looking in a blandly Waspy Robert Redford sort of way, but it is hard to believe that this guy was the catch of the century.

Still, off the trio sets in hot pursuit with many a merry misadventure along the way, including an embarrassing trip to the dry cleaners to remove a Clintonian dress stain, the snagging of one girl's tonsils on her lover's pierced penis and a restaurant scene which starts off as a blatant rip-off of the fake orgasm sequence in When Harry Met Sally and ends up as a full-scale musical number in praise of the male organ with the showstopping refrain, "It's too big to fit in here".
