The Innkeepers

(Metrodome, cert 18, Blu-ray/DVD)

Big screen last week, small screen this, Ti West’s moody horror film is Clerks meets The Shining, all smart slacker banter in a haunted down-at-heel hotel. Highly recommended, not least for the glimpse it affords of future star Sara Paxton.

A Dangerous Method

An adaptation of Christopher Hampton’s play The Talking Cure, starring Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud, Michael Fassbender (left) as Carl Jung and Keira Knightley (on a mission to prove she can act) as Jung’s patient. A fascinating drama of ideas, like Merchant Ivory with a PhD.

Can’t get enough Nordic noir? These two Swedish whodunits starring Rolf Lassgård (the original Wallander) should hit the spot, though they’re gloomy, even by the standards of The Killing etc, as the original title, Den Fördömde (The Condemned) suggests.
