Figures from industry research group Kantar this week Sainsbury’s was the best performing of the big four grocers over the last quarter.
The Co-op was the UK’s fastest growing grocer in the 12 weeks to April 19, with Iceland, Ocado and Lidl also top performers. Sainsbury’s was the best performing of the four biggest grocers.
The results are the last under chief executive Mike Coupe, 59, who has led the retailer for nearly six years after replacing Justin King. He retires next month and will hand over to retail and operations director Simon Roberts.
His tenure will be remembered for two big deals – buying Argos and being blocked from acquiring Asda by regulators – and a TV gaffe in which he was caught on camera singing “we’re in the money” after announcing the Asda merger.
