Rolls-Royce has been forced to ramp up checks on 380 engines on Dreamliner jets over suspected parts defects.

The engineering firm will increase the frequency of inspections on some Trent 1000 engines, which are used on Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.

Chief executive Warren East said it would try to minimise disruption to airlines and passengers before the busy summer travel season.

“Safety is our priority. We will focus on getting people flying again. Boeing are being very supportive. This has tightened our relationship with them.”

East said the engines issue, first flagged last month, would have little impact on the company’s ambition to boost cashflow.

Spending on discretionary items like IT programmes and travel will be cut to cushion the blow.
