A handful of restaurant chain Prezzo’s London sites are among 22 set to close this year.

Prezzo’s owners revealed last week that the chain is to axe 22 restaurants and cut 216 jobs after it was rescued out of administration.

Cain International, which purchased Prezzo as a going concern from previous private equity owners TPG in December, has bought the casual dining chain back from administrators in a pre-pack deal to secure its future.

Cain, which already owns London-based brands including crazy golf chain Swingers, said that the action protects the vast majority of Prezzo’s 2,900 team members’ jobs.

All the company's 178 sites are currently shut due to the lockdown. The ongoing blow comes as Cain said the chain had only been able to operate for 25 weeks out of the past 52 - all while seeing fixed costs and rent accumulate.

It is understood that the company filed for insolvency after failing to reach an agreement with landlords over rent payments.

Jonathan Goldstein, chief executive of Cain, has said that he and the management team "are deeply sorry for all those affected by the permanent closure of the 22 non-viable restaurants.
