Pret a Manger will announce job cuts on July 8 as sales have dived during coronavirus lockdown.

According to a leaked video seen by the BBC, an announcement about the "job situation" at the sandwich chain will be made next month.

Boss Pano Christou told employees on the video that weekly sales had fallen to just £3 million, 15% of what they would normally be.

In the video, which was leaked and shared on Twitter, Pano said: "What will be the case is, on the 8 July, we'll be doing a broader communication to the teams, just talking through the initial work that's been done on this, so things will start to become clearer from 8 July," he said.

In May, Pret A Manger called in consultants to help renegotiate its rents as it attempted to avoid store closures during the coronavirus epidemic.

The chain has reopened around 300 of its UK stores for takeaway and delivery customers, after shutting all of its sites in March.

A Pret spokesperson said: "At the end of May we appointed advisers to help Pret develop a comprehensive transformation plan to adapt to the new retail environment.

"Transparency is very important in our business and we will make sure that Pret’s Team Members are the first to hear about any changes. We will update our Team Members in early July once the plan has been finalised."
