Kantar added that British shopping habits have changed markedly since lockdown began with people buying much more food than normal. Overall sales from UK supermarkets increased by 13.7% year on year in the 12 weeks to 14 June 2020.
Kantar could not explain why people are buying more food.
McKevitt added: "Customers are continuing to buy more than usual, spending 42% more per trip than in June last year at £26.37 on average."
Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose Lidl and Aldi all reported strong sales.
