He said the capital raising and refinancing "will provide the business with the certainty of funding that it needs in order to emerge in a stronger position" from the pandemic, and to deliver value to shareholders.
Shares were up 8% to 355p by Monday lunchtime.
Analysts at Numis said: "This transaction will leave M&B with one of the strongest balance sheets in the sector... When the sector reopens we expect M&B to trade strongly and the valuation remains attractive".
