FTSE 100 supermarket chain Tesco has launched its new GetGo concept at one of its branches in High Holborn. It features tech that will allow shoppers to pick up groceries, and leave without using a physical in-store till.

Once customers leave, they will be charged to the card linked with their Tesco grocery app. Shoppers will receive a receipt within minutes of exiting the store.

Tesco is not the first retailer to try out tech aimed at offering shoppers a different way of paying.

Here are some of the other companies offering, or trialling, new concepts in London…

Aldi

Discounter Aldi in September said it was testing checkout-free tech. The trial in Greenwich “will use a system of cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence to identify the items customers take from shelves, alleviating the need to go through a checkout”.

The tech allows customers to scan a smartphone app to enter the store, pick up their shopping, and simply walk out without the need to pay at a till. Shortly after their visit, they will get an email receipt and be charged automatically using their chosen payment method.

Amazon

Online retail behemoth Amazon has increased its presence on UK high streets this year by opening six Amazon Fresh grocery stores.

To enter these branches customers use a Amazon app. They can pick up goods, and then walk away. Shortly after they get an email receipt and are billed from their Amazon account.

The till-free experience is made possible by tech that detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves, and keeps track of them in a virtual basket.

At one of the branches the Evening Standard visited this earlier this year, there was a number of cameras coming out from the ceiling.

The Amazon Fresh stores are in: Canary Wharf; Chalk Farm; Dalston; Ealing; Wembley Park; White City.

Tesco
