The FCA prosecution will be damaging to the reputation of the bank’s chief executive Alison Rose who has set a firm moral compass at the group after huge criticisms over the way it mistreated SME customers in financial difficulties after the global financial crisis.
It is unclear in which division of the bank the accounts were held, but Rose was in charge of commercial and private banking before becoming chief executive in 2019.
Rose changed the name from Royal Bank of Scotland when she took over from Ross McEwan and has been keen to portray the company as a force for good.
She is a NatWest lifer, having started her career there in 1992 as a management trainee.
