The new Flood Re scheme allowing insurers to pool the risk of providing cover in flood-prone areas will be swamped. What’s more, it does not apply to commercial property or to tenants in rented accommodation.
An urgent rethink is required by the Government and by the private sector.
It’s no use business sitting back and believing Whitehall will tackle the problem. It must do its bit — and that means the implementation of an adequate insurance system, no more building on flood plains, insurers requiring homeowners to put their white goods on plinths above the floor, placing electricity sockets higher up and replacing carpets downstairs with stone flooring.
Time is running out. As I write this, my parents in Cumbria report that it’s raining again.
