The central problem is whether or not politicians can be trusted to use it responsibly.
The implications of this are serious. I have no more idea than anyone else about whether or not the global economy will once again come crashing down about our ears.
But if such a disaster were to happen, I would hope that every conceivable policy option would be deployed to minimise its ill effects.
The message therefore is that we should use the time we have available now not to argue about economic niceties but to devise mechanisms and structures which will control politicians so that if we ever are in such a desperate situation, we will not be afraid to use the tool.
