Warm grooves: Joe Mount gets nostalgic on fifth Metronomy album Summer 08

It feels a bit early to be getting nostalgic about 2008.

For Metronomy’s one-man band Joe Mount, his fifth album’s title is apt because most of its songs are constructed from demos and loops from much earlier in his career.
The rubbery groove of standout track Hang Me Out to Dry, a duet with Robyn, was meant for his third album. On Old Skool he’s looking back even further, adding cowbell and scratching from Beastie Boys cohort Mix Master Mike. As a whole it sounds like his liveliest album yet, from the urgent bass of 16 Beat to the warm groove of My House.
There’s still something awkward about his sense of melody that sets his sound apart from pure pop music, but he’s rarely sounded more appealing.
